EMDR with Children & Adolescents

14 CE’s have been approved (EMDRIA) for those joining from the USA, Canada or other countries where their national association is EMDRIA. 

(please note : to be eligible for this training, you MUST have been trained to at least part 1 / level 1 of an EMDR Accredited / Certified program recognised by the country you practise therapy in). 

This is a 14 hour training, delivered over 2 days online, with timings designed to make this training accessible to our USA and Canadian colleagues. 

This live webinar (November 7-8, 2025) online (set to convenient times for attendees in the USA: 9.30 – 4.30 EST)  provides training in all aspects of delivering EMDR to clinicians wanting to modify the standard EMDR protocol to work with children from age 2 upwards, covering the EMDR Europe Child Syllabus: neurobiology – understanding the impact of trauma on the child’s developing brain; the four main age divisions of EMDR modifications (with video examples of delivering each modification); the narrative (story-telling) approach to delivering EMDR (with a practicum); using CIPOS (Jim Knipe) – modified by Dagmar Eckers for children (with a practicum) and; an introduction to IGTP (Ignacio Jarero).   This webinar follows the curriculum taught throughout Europe for EMDR Accredited Child & Adolescent Trainings. 

This is a hands-on, practical training which infuses playfulness, creativity and practical applications of using EMDR with children, adolescents and adults with child-parts.

Susan Darker-Smith is a UK accredited EMDR Europe Child & Adolescent Trainer who teaches throughout the world on how to use EMDR flexibly and creatively with clients aged from 0 – 100.  She is a founding member of the Global Child-EMDR Alliance (with Ana Gomez) and a founding Trustee of the Trauma Response Network UK (which provides free EMDR to anyone impacted by mass trauma). 

Learning Objectives: 

1.  The neurobiology of trauma on Children and Adolescents 

  • Understand the impact of trauma on the developing brain

2. Learn how to modify the 8-phase EMDR protocol for Children & Adolescents

  • Learn the 4 ages and stages in which there are differences in the delivery of EMDR, based on emotional stage of the client 
  • Watch videos of actual child clients, bringing the application of these modifications to life

3. Learn how to deliver an EMDR Narrative to a Child or Adolescent (or Adult with child-parts)

  • Understand the mechanics of how to deliver a trauma narrative in EMDR 
  • Practise in small groups, using your own clients as an opportunity to write a trauma narrative or story that can be delivered after the training to your own client

4.  Understand how to stretch the window of tolerance and how to resource with children

  • Learn CIPOS to help stretch the window of tolerance
  • Appreciate the domain of the resource / safe place
  • Understand that safety may need to be a different resource for children who have never felt safe

5.  Appreciate the role of FUTURE protocols IGTP (on an individual basis or in groups)

  • Learn the difference between processing and resourcing in the future

6.  Appreciate how the IGTP (Jarrero) can be used on an individual basis or in group

  • Experience an introduction to the IGTP protocol which has been evidenced down to age 4 with children.
